CHANUKAH
More
than 2000 years ago, a Syrian King named Antiochus, tried to force the Jews to
give up their religion. Judah Maccabee led his people in a fight to drive the
Syrians out of Israel. The Jews finally won back the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
They scrubbed and cleaned it and polished the huge menorah. But when the priests
were ready to begin services they could only find a tiny jar of pure oil to burn
in the menorah, only enough for one day. By a miracle, the oil burned on and on
for eight days.
For eight days each year, the chanukiyah, or eight-branched
candelabrum, is lit to recall the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and to
give thanks for the great miracle of the survival of the Jewish people. We learn
about the Chanukah story in school in a simple manner with emphasis on the
importance of being proud of what you are and standing up for what is right. We
dramatize the story, sing songs, and make Chanukah gifts, chanukiyot and
decorations. We also light the chanukiyah each day.

Frequently Asked
Questions
How should the Chanukah candles be placed in the chanukiyah?
Always place the candles in the chanukiyah beginning from the far
right and continuing to the left. The shamash (head candle) is the
ninth candle and is used to light the other candles.
What is the order of kindling the Chanukah lights?
Candles are lighted from left to right – one candle and the shamash on
the 1st night, two candles and the shamash on the 2nd
night, three candles and the shamash on the 3rd night, and
so on through the eighth night.
When should the Chanukah candles be kindled?
Candles may be lit immediately after sundown if that is possible. On
Friday evening, the Chanukah candles are kindled before we light the Shabbat
candles.
Where do we place the chanukiyah?
In front of a window or the like in order to share our joy. One may light
the Chanukah candles on behalf of the entire family, but in many
homes, each person lights his/her own. The glow of the candles adds a
special feeling of warmth and beauty.
Activities
MOBILES
Make a Chanukah mobile using dough art. Mix flour, water and salt to make
clay dough and use a cookie cutter to cut out the symbols. Paint them and dry
them and put then on hangars. A cardboard holder for six packs of soda pop can
be used to hang the symbols from.
DREIDEL GAME
On Chanukah we play the Dreidel Game. A dreidel is a top with 4 sides. On
each side is a Hebrew letter. The four letters stand for the Hebrew words Nes
Gadol Hayah Sham. This means, "A great wonder happened
there."
To play, each players needs some candies or pennies. Each player puts one
into the "pot." Everyone takes turns spinning the dreidel. If the
dreidel falls on:
- Nun – don’t take anything
- Gimmel – take everything in the "pot"
- Hay – take half the "pot"
- Shin – put one back into the "pot"
The player with the most candies or pennies at the end wins.

And when it is all tired, it drops and then I win.
Chorus: Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay,
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, then dreidel I will play.
