ADULT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Jewish Learning is a Lifelong Pursuit
The lifelong pursuit of Jewish learning enables each of us to transform the
meaning of everyday life and to frame responses to the ultimate questions about
life. Adult learning nourishes both the heart and soul of those who pursue it.
You are invited to explore Judaism through the many opportunities available at
Fairmount Temple. All are invited as we Open the Doors of Jewish Life
Together.
Weekly - Wake Up Wednesday Mornings and Learn
This is an opportunity to learn lessons drawn from a particular text on Wednesday
mornings, from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. in the Lelyveld Center for Jewish Learning. Come
as often as your schedule permits. The rabbis lead this weekly series, which is open to all - stop in before work, before
your morning walk, or after the kids have gotten on the school bus!
Weekly - Parashat HaShavua (Torah study)
Engage the text of the weekly Torah portion, led by Dr. Alan D. Bennett,
to discover why it survives millennia with new meaning for each generation.
Unlock its surface and deeper insights and how they are relevant to your
life. Share the wisdom of commentary, midrash and your companions around the
table. Hebrew knowledge not required. Each Shabbat gathering is a stand-alone
session. Come once, come often. Books provided, or bring your own favorite
translation to compare with others. Every Saturday, 9:15-10:30 in the
Arthur J. Lelyveld Learning Center.
You are
invited to join the Library Minyan for worship following the Torah Study
session.
Special - Adult B'nai Mitzvah Program
Fairmount Temple offers a group program for those adults seeking the
opportunity to learn in community and celebrate being called to the Torah. The
program includes core Judaic curriculum with the clergy team; Hebrew language
skills; individualized learning opportunities and personal Jewish exploration.
Monday Night Learning (Third Series of 5768)
Mondays, March 3 – 17, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.
The writings of
Abraham Joshua Heschel – Encore!
Rabbi Arturo
Kalfus
In October,
Fairmount Temple’s first Monday Night Learning Session of 5768 focused on the
thought-provoking writings of Rabbi Abraham Heschel. Because he was such a
prolific and inspiring writer, those who participated in the first session
wanted more. So here it is. If you attended the first series, this will be
examinations of different writings of Rabbi Heschel; if you weren’t able to
attend earlier, take this opportunity to learn from a master who changed and
influenced so many in his generation and beyond. The series will focus on three
aspects of Heschel's writings: his theological teachings, his views on social
action, and his views about prophetic Judaism. Above all else, we will be
introduced to a master of the spirit who taught in his final interview: "Live
your life as a work of art".
A New Learning
Opportunity - DOWNTOWN
If you work in
downtown Cleveland, Fairmount Temple is offering Lunch and Learn, Downtown.
Here’s a great chance to use your lunch hour to meet with other “downtowners”
and the rabbis to “lunch and learn.” Lunch will be in a conference room of
different offices throughout the year and discussion will focus on topics of
interest from traditional and contemporary perspectives. Space is limited.
Women's Study
Group
For women
interested in continued Jewish study, topics are
wide-ranging, diverse and always thought-provoking. This
theme
of this year’s series is
“Mothers and Daughters,” including discussion about Joyce Antler’s book, You
Never Call, You Never Write!: A History of the Jewish Mother and the second
volume of Maggie Anton’s trilogy, Rashi’s Daughters, Book II:
Miriam.
